Why should you inspect the flue and chimney in your new home?

If you’ve just moved into a property with an existing fireplace (open fire, log burner or stove) it’s important to have the fireplace and chimney inspected. 

Even if the previous owners were using the fire regularly that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a potentially dangerous accident waiting to happen. 

When you have a homebuyer report done, the fireplace and inside of the chimney are not inspected unless paperwork has been supplied. 

This means there could be issues that no one is aware of. You won’t know when the last inspection took place if there is no paperwork trial., so you need to check the health of your chimney to ensure its safety and performance.

Ideal if you have no paper work, service record etc and don't want to leave to chance.

Level 1 Chimney Inspection & Report 

• In-depth inspection to ensure it meets current regulation (DocJ) with detailed report

• Includes: checking audit trail, Inspection from ground & Drone check (weather permitting*)  to check current sate of chimney stacks, pots & flaunching etc)

• A New Homeowner Inspection is not a Certificate of Compliance for the install - this has to be done by the installing engineer or building control.  

 Level 1 Chimney Inspection:

This is the most common and fundamental inspection. A visual check to look for any obstructions in your chimney such as creosote build-up, a bird nest, or soot.

After the inspection, the sweep will commence. Your sweep will use brushes, extension poles, and a specialised vacuum to remove any material build-up in your chimney and safely contain it.

Whatever you do, don’t try to clean your chimney yourself. Use a professional, accredited chimney sweep. They can inspect your chimney properly and give you a certificate when done.

As well as getting your chimney swept, you should also check the structure is all safe, well-maintained and up to the challenge of coping with modern heating appliances. We suggest lining your chimney if it isn’t already, which should be done by a qualified and certified chimney engineer.
