Most multi-fuel stoves and log burners in the united kingdom are fitted with internal fire bricks around the sides and back of the grate. Most firebricks are made from vermiculite board or fired clay. Vermiculite reflects the heat into the stove, while clay tends to be better at retaining the heat overall.
In the main It won't affect performance or safety but it will affect lifespan of the unit. The fire brick is there to provide protection to the steel and thermal mass.
If possible, replace the brick. A general rule of thumb is that cracks are ok, but big gaps big enough to insert your finger are not ideal
In most cases they can be repaired on the day if the brick is good order and you can get a little longer before needing to order new ones.
In most cases if you let us know the stove/log burner make and model we can order in the correct parts for you, or if you order the parts we can fit them as part of a sweep. In some case we can cut a new set to size if they are basic shapes and a specialised size/shape.
If you are in the Wirral, Liverpool or Chester? and need firebricks replaced or other parts get in touch with us at Sean The Sweep
Most firebricks are made from vermiculite board or fired clay. Vermiculite reflects the heat into the stove, while clay tends to be better at retaining the heat overall.
These are the two most popular materials, some stove use steel plates as a way of not having firebricks fitted. Like all internal components of your stove, they are subject to thermal expansion and over time, the materials expand and contract due to temperature changes. Sudden or rapid changes in the temperature can lead to cracks in the firebricks. Heavy impact on the bricks, poor fuel, and incorrect fuel loading can also lead to cracks in the firebricks but its not unsual for them to crack anyway.
There should be no urgent need to replace your cracked firebrick if it remains stable and isn't exposing the stove body. You should swap the firebrick if it's starting to crumble, is showing the outer body, or is not staying in place.
