Do you need a Chimney Sweep?

A good chimney/flue is essential to the continuing your fires efficiency and it's safe operation!

There were 2,540 reported chimney fires in England from April 2022 to March 2023. Regardless of what type of chimney you have, or even if it's lined, it will still need regular sweeping.

Regular sweeping prevents chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, early detection of issues, improved draft and efficiency, prolongs the life of your chimney/liner, helps you comply with a lot of house insurance policies & reduces smoke and odours

Soot is acidic in nature and if left in your chimney or liner and the internals of your log burner or stove causing damage, sweeping and regular maintenance will help prolong the life of your chimney and saving you money in the long run. Replacing a liner or lining a chimney is not cheap.

The best way to prove a chimney is being maintained is to show evidence such as a chimney sweep certificate. This helps you comply with a lot home insurance polices.

Chimney Sweep Log burner FAQs

Yes, Regular cleaning will remove soot and creosote, helping prevent dangerous chimney fires. Cleaning will increase the efficiency of some appliances. Bird nests, cobwebs and other blockages will be removed.

If your chimney is not swept the build of soot could create a fire hazard causing a possible chimney fire. The flue risks becoming blocked by soot, brickwork falling, nesting birds or even smoke coming back into the room.

During your annual sweep and inspection, we thoroughly inspect all appliances

Yes, a wood burner with a chimney lined still needs to be swept regularly. Even with a chimney liner, soot, creosote, and other debris can accumulate over time. Regular sweeping is essential for several reasons:

  • Prevent Chimney Fires: Creosote build-up is highly flammable and can lead to dangerous chimney fires if not removed. Regular sweeping helps to minimize this risk.
  • Ensure Proper Ventilation: Debris such as bird nests, cobwebs, and soot can obstruct the chimney liner, affecting the efficiency and safety of your wood burner. Sweeping ensures that the chimney is clear and can vent smoke and gases properly.
  • Maintain Efficiency: A clean chimney allows your wood burner to operate more efficiently, providing better heat output and reducing fuel consumption.

Prolongs the life on your liner, if a liner is not swept the corrosive soot can corrode and cause the liner to fail  in as little as 1-3+ year depending on burning practices

What causes chimney fires? Chimney fires are often caused by a build up of tar/creosote or soot

Whatever you do, don’t try to clean your chimney yourself. Use a professional, accredited chimney sweep. They can inspect your chimney properly and give you a certificate when done.

As well as getting your chimney swept, you should also check the structure is all safe, well-maintained and up to the challenge of coping with modern heating appliances. We suggest lining your chimney if it isn’t already, which should be done by a qualified and certified chimney engineer.

Why You Should Have Your Chimney Swept Every 12 Months

Safety is the first and key point - Prevent chimney fires, carbon monoxide/CO poisoning

The main reason to have your chimney swept at least annually is safety. Over time, creosote, soot and builds up within the chimney. If not removed it can ignite leading to a chimney fire

  •  Improved draft and efficiency

A clear chimney is more efficient, as creosote and soot build up it narrows the flue and causes a obstruction, obstructing the smooth flow of smoke and gases leaving your appliance. Sweeping your chimney regularly guarantees it will be running at its best.

  •  Prolong life of the Chimney/liner

Taking regular care of your chimney or liner will extend its lifespan, the accumulation of creosote, soot, sulphur along with weather elements can accelerate the wear and tear of your chimney.

  •  Compliance with your house insurance policy

Some insurance policies require proof of regular chimney maintenance and sweeping. By adhering to an annual sweeping schedule and keeping records of the service via a sweep certificate, you ensure that your home insurance remains valid and fully covers potential damages that may arise in the worst case.

  •  Reduce smoke and Odours

Keeping your chimney clear of any deposits or debris will help with any odours

If you use a stove or an open fireplace, getting your chimney swept is essential.

Due to a build-up of soot, creosote, and other flammable substances, an unswept chimney is a fire risk. Lighting your fire with an unswept chimney puts you in danger and can have devastating consequences. The CO gases that occur with any burning fire must be able to escape through the chimney to keep your property safe. Not sweeping your chimney can cause blockages, leading to highly dangerous gases re-entering the room.

Sweeping a chimney greatly increases the safety of your appliance by ensuring harmful gases can escape and no flammable materials stick around in your chimney

Do we offer certificates?

Yes we supply a certificate to prove the sweep has been completed, at times we also may have to issue warning notices if the appliance is deemed unsafe.

This certificate will help you comply with your home insurance policy.

Chimney Inspection

Regular chimney inspections are important to detect any potential issues before they become major problems. We provide comprehensive chimney inspections to identify any issues and recommend the best solutions.

Insured & HETAS Approved

Yes we are fully insured for the work carried out. We have full liability insurance, including employee liability insurance to cover any incident.

If a fault occurs during sweeping, this is not the fault of the sweep; for a chimney and items connected to the installation to be considered fit for use, it must be in such condition that it can be safely cleaned and tested. If damage is caused during sweeping, this suggests an underlying fault which simply was exposed by the sweeping process.
